These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Acts 17:11 KJV
The Bible teaches us that in ancient times the apostasy of Israel was repeated, and that when it reached its highest point, it triggered the corresponding judgment from God. In the same way, today we are witnesses to how the Christian world is sinking into an apostasy that is nearly universal and that, according to the sure word of prophecy, will give rise to a "time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation until that time."
By the mercy of God, all of this has been warned to us in advance so that we may be attentive to the signs and, following the recommendation of the Savior: "take heed that no one deceives you."
Today, many daughters of Babylon are seeking to achieve total dominance to exercise authority in the name of their "Mother" (whether they are aware of the fact or not), and the argument they have resolved upon to achieve their ends is the distortion of the teachings of both the Old and New Testaments with an "it is biblical."
These three simple words have become the weapon of choice for all those who, blinded by the hunger for power, seek to coerce the entire world into following traditions of men disguised as commandments of God.
It is tragic that many church members are being trained to be neophytes for life. Regrettably, the example of the Bereans seems to be something left in the annals of history that will not be seen again before the coming of the Savior. But, by the mercy of God, I am convinced that many will be awakened to fill their lamps and their vessels with the oil of the Spirit before the last day.
It is important that as Christians we carry out our own study of the Scriptures. Even if a doctrine, paradigm, or teaching seems "biblical" to us, it is important to study and detect whether they are trying to deceive us with Scripture taken out of context or simply distorted.
A clear example is the push in modern Christian circles to promote anti-blasphemy laws that carry the maximum penalty of execution for the guilty. They simply say: "it is biblical, we must enforce respect for God, we must eliminate immorality and purify our nation, and, in due time, the entire world."
While it is true that in ancient Israel blasphemy could be punished with death, the reason was very clear and logical: the Israelites dwelt in the camp of the LORD. In the center of the camp was the Tabernacle of meeting, which, in turn, was the dwelling place of the presence of God among the people. Knowing the attributes of God and His Justice, we would understand that in the presence of God the impenitent sinner has no place.
All those who sinned within the camp had the opportunity and the privilege to approach the priest—who was a type of our Lord Jesus Christ—so that he would sacrifice and intercede for them and their transgressions would be forgiven. Thus, although the justice of God always prevailed, His mercy was also present for the penitent.
The people who were executed had ended their time of grace, and since God knew that their hearts were totally estranged from His holy presence, execution was the only form of just punishment that, in turn, represented the destiny of the ungodly not only of that time, but also of future generations: "The wages of sin is death."
But we do not have the Tabernacle that the Israelites had in ancient times, and therefore it is not our place to determine who can continue to enjoy the mercy of God and who cannot. This is an exclusive prerogative of the Almighty.
Our Lord Jesus did not pronounce condemnation upon the adulterous woman; likewise, He said that blasphemy against the Son would be forgiven. How, then, do certain groups consider themselves to be in a position to enforce laws that were applied in a completely different context than the present one and, furthermore, punish them under the penalty of death?
Chapter 13 of Revelation allows us to understand that there will be a conflict associated with a mark tied to the worship of a certain Beast, and that those who do not receive said mark would be sentenced to death. Could it be that we are approaching that very moment predicted in the Bible?
It is important to study on our own and not feed on pre-digested teachings just because they are accompanied by an "it is biblical." Salvation is individual and, therefore, requires our committed and diligent study. When that day comes, we will not be able to save our souls by telling God: "it is how they taught it to me." If we seek the direction and knowledge of God through earnest, personal study, He will respond with the answers we need.
